Begin at Kwessi Dunes, deep within the vast NamibRand Nature Reserve, where towering dunes, rugged mountains, desert plains and extraordinary night skies create an otherworldly desert escape. Continue to The Strand in Swakopmund, perfectly positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, before finishing at Etosha Mountain Lodge, where private-reserve safari experiences offer encounters with black and white rhino, elephant, lion and other African wildlife.

Designed for adventurous travellers who enjoy the freedom of the open road without compromising on luxury, this journey showcases the extraordinary diversity of Namibia's desert, coastline and wilderness.

About NamibRand Nature Reserve

One of Namibia's largest private nature reserves, NamibRand Nature Reserve spans more than 200,000 hectares of pristine desert wilderness. Its landscape of red dunes, rolling plains, rocky mountains and desert-adapted wildlife is particularly spectacular around Kwessi Dunes. The reserve is also renowned for its exceptional night skies and status as an International Dark Sky Reserve.

About Etosha Heights Private Reserve

Situated along the southwestern boundary of Etosha National Park, Etosha Heights Private Reserve offers an exclusive safari experience away from the busier public areas of the national park. The reserve is particularly known for its rhino conservation and opportunities to encounter elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard and abundant plains game.

Namibia's roads include a combination of tarred highways and gravel roads, so a suitable 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended

Day 1: Journey into the Desert, Windhoek to NamibRand

Begin your self-drive journey south towards the extraordinary landscapes of the Namib Desert
Continue towards NamibRand Nature Reserve, where the landscape gradually transforms from open plains into vast desert scenery, rugged mountains and red dunes
Arrive at Kwessi Dunes and settle into your luxurious desert accommodation
Spend the afternoon relaxing at camp or enjoying your first guided nature experience before watching the sun disappear over the desert

Days 2–3: Full-Day Desert Experience at Kwessi Dunes

Your days will be spent exploring the extraordinary landscapes of NamibRand Nature Reserve, with a choice of guided desert experiences and time to simply enjoy the tranquillity of the camp.

The landscape changes dramatically as the desert gives way to the rugged coastline
Continue to Swakopmund, Namibia's charming coastal town, and check into The Strand
Spend the afternoon exploring the town, strolling along the promenade or enjoying the hotel's beachfront setting

Day 5: Full-Day Adventure in Swakopmund

Your day will be spent exploring the unique landscapes surrounding Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Return to The Strand for your final evening on the coast.

As the landscape changes from coastal desert to open bushveld, you'll begin to enter one of Namibia's premier wildlife regions
Arrive at Etosha Mountain Lodge, settle into your room and enjoy your first safari experience in the reserve
End the day with a sunset over the Namibian wilderness

Days 7–8: Full-Day Safari at Etosha Mountain Lodge

Your days will be spent exploring the exclusive Etosha Heights Private Reserve, with an emphasis on wildlife, conservation and experiencing the Namibian bush.

Important Notes

Driving distances in Namibia are long, so journeys should not be rushed. Gravel roads can become challenging after heavy rain; always check local road conditions before departure
Drive cautiously and adhere to Namibia's speed limits, particularly on gravel roads
Wildlife and livestock can cross roads unexpectedly
Ensure the vehicle is refuelled whenever an opportunity arises
Travel with sufficient drinking water when travelling through remote areas
Mobile reception may be limited or unavailable in parts of the journey
A valid driver's licence and appropriate vehicle documentation are required
International visitors should confirm whether an international driving permit is required for their rental vehicle
Travel insurance is strongly recommended, including appropriate cover for self-drive travel
Namibia can experience significant temperature changes between day and night, particularly in desert areas.
At Kwessi Dunes, early mornings and evenings can be cold during the winter months
