Nestled against natural rock formations within the Cederberg Mountains and far away from the big city lights lies the Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve. This historical reserve connects visitors of today with the soulful heritage and landscape that was once inhabited by the Khoi and San. Kagga Kamma is unique in that it comprises an untouched Karoo-like wilderness: decorated in bursts of wildflowers, scattered and fascinating rock formations and an intriguing ecosystem of small creatures scarcely seen or found anywhere else.
The accommodation offering at Kagga Kamma is unique and offers guests unsurpassed views of the nature reserve.
Kagga Kamma offers ten unique man-made 'Cave' Suites that were skilfully constructed to integrate with the natural sandstone formations. The facade of the 'Cave' Suites are man-made, while the back interior wall is natural sandstone. Each 'Cave' Suite has a small terrace with a view and is simply furnished with comfort in mind. The beautiful rock formations can be experienced up close in these man-made suites that blend into their environment seamlessly. Each 'Cave' is equipped with a double bed, air-conditioner, and coffee/tea making facilities, en-suite bathroom, bathrobes, hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries.
The Honeymoon ‘Cave’ Suite is Kagga Kamma’s biggest and most romantic Unit, perfect for a honeymoon, anniversary, or another special occasion. The Suite has a double bed, open plan bathroom with romantic bath, air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, bathrobes and guest amenities. The terrace overlooks the beautiful fynbos plains and mountain ranges. A sandstone rock in front of your suite allows for privacy.
The Premium ‘Cave’ Suite is situated at the top furthest right end, allowing for a wide-angle view of the fynbos plains and majestic mountains in the background. The Premium ‘Cave’ has a double bed, an en-suite bathroom with a shower, air-conditioning, a tea and coffee station, hairdryer, bathrobes, and guest amenities. The sliding door opens up out onto a small terrace, perfect for two to admire the astonishing views.
The five spacious thatched huts at Kagga Kamma resemble the traditional dwellings of the San clans that inhabited the Reserve many years ago. Each hut has twin beds or a king-size bed with an en-suite bathroom, a double sleeper couch, air-conditioner, coffee/tea making facilities, bathrobes, hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries.
The Sky Suite is situated on a remote rocky crag, seven kilometres from the Lodge. It is complemented with a queen sized bed, open-air shower and toilet, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes, guest amenities and absolute privacy. At the Sky Suite Room, guests can lie back and watch shooting stars at night and in the morning be slowly awakened by the rising sun.
The Star Suite is set on a private platform about three kilometres from the Main Lodge, amongst beautiful rock formations. With no compromise on comfort, the Suite is fitted with a queen-size bed, cosy bedding, outdoor shower, toilet, “star bath”, private rock pool, outdoor lounge, boma, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and guest amenities.
*The Open-Air Suites are only available for reservations from September to April, weather permitting.
The Swartrug Campsite
The main camping grounds are made up of five stands which each accommodate a maximum of two or six guests. Swartrug is situated near one of the swimming pools for a refreshing dip and is easily accessible. Camping guests have easy access to all hiking and mountain-biking trails and are welcome to make use of the Restaurant and Spa facilities for a well-rounded, relaxing stay.
Nestled comfortably alongside the Timeshare Chalets, the single Self Catering Chalet offers every homely comfort set against the backdrop of rolling fynbos plains and intriguing rock formations. Explore the wildnerness region on a self-guided hike, traversing the landscape and relishing the summer breeze and, at night, when the jackal howls and the Milky Way lights the sky, enjoy a family meal in a private boma space.

The Cederberg Mountains lie approx. 2 hours’ drive north of Cape Town and the Winelands. Yet it is like no other area of the Cape. Here there are no manicured gardens, glitzy shops or attractions teeming with tourists. Rather you experience a raw, rugged beauty and a sense of utter peace and tranquillity. But without driving for hours and hours to get it!
As you travel over the Piekenierskloof Pass, you descend into a different world. The countryside has changed. It's wilder and warmer, with raw, dramatic beauty. The Cederberg Mountains, brilliant purple in the late afternoon light, tower over our fruit-filled valley which is laden with the scent of orange blossom in the spring.
It's a natural arena for adventure lovers with great hiking and mountain biking opportunities. However, its stunning mountain passes and landscapes can be equally enjoyed by vehicle. The Cederberg is also known for its beautiful wildflowers in spring, with good rains seeing carpets of flowers in August. Enjoy hiking in the wilderness, swimming in natural rock pools or simply relaxing in one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas of South Africa.
