Shamwari Explorer Camp | Eastern Cape Safari Experience

Experience safari in its most authentic form at Shamwari Explorer Camp, a seasonal wilderness camp offering an immersive guided walking safari in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Designed to take guests back to the basics of safari, the camp focuses on nature, exploration and unforgettable encounters in the wild.

Operating from September to May, Explorer Camp offers a unique opportunity to explore the reserve on foot with experienced guides. Walking through the wilderness allows you to experience the sights, sounds and smaller details of the bush from a completely different perspective.

Set on a plateau among the only basalt and granite rock formations on Shamwari Private Game Reserve, the camp enjoys a spectacular and secluded setting. The discreet fencing provides an added level of safety while preserving the authentic atmosphere of a traditional explorer-style camp.

The comfortable safari tents are thoughtfully positioned to provide privacy while maintaining the intimate feel of camp life. With its back-to-basics approach, incredible wilderness setting and guided walking experiences, Shamwari Explorer Camp is ideal for travellers looking for an authentic Eastern Cape bush break with a true sense of adventure.

A True Explorer Experience

Explorer Camp embraces a back-to-basics approach to safari. There is no mains electricity, with solar-powered lighting used throughout camp and gas geysers providing hot water. Delicious meals are prepared over an open fire, adding to the authentic atmosphere of this wilderness experience.

The camp is discreetly fenced for safety, while retaining the atmosphere of a traditional explorer camp. The safari tents are positioned close to one another while still providing guests with privacy.

As this is a genuine wilderness experience, wild animals may pass through the camp at any time. While comprehensive safety measures are in place, guests should be aware that wildlife movement through the camp is a natural part of the experience. All guests are required to follow the guidance and safety instructions provided by the camp and their guide.

Important Information
Minimum age: Guests must be 16 years or older to participate in the Explorer Camp experience.
Guests over 65: Guests over the age of 65 will be required to provide a medical certificate confirming that they are fit to participate in the walking safari experience.
Pregnancy: For safety reasons, pregnant guests are unfortunately unable to participate in the guided walks or stay at Explorer Camp.

What to expect:

The Explorer Camp tents are simplistic yet comfortably equipped with all the modern amenities required to add extra ambiance and comfort.

• LED Light for night time use
• additional amenities such as insect repellent, shower gel & shampoo as well as other essentials

While all safety precautions have been followed when setting up these facilities, guests are still treated to panoramic views of the landscape.

Large numbers of ungulates sustain a healthy population of lion, cheetah, and the elusive leopard. Grasslands are home to white rhino, and the subtropical thicket provides browsing for elephant and black rhino. Hippo is found in the riverine habitat. The reintroduced red-billed ox-pecker is a common site on buffalo, rhino and giraffe.
