Makweti Safari Lodge is an experience for the discerning wildlife aficionado. Timelessly African, it embodies the eras of Livingstone and Hemingway, while standing as a model of modern, environmentally sensitive taste.
The Lodge caters to no more than 10 guests, with five luxury suites that blend seductively into an ideal safari landscape.
This landscape is a natural home for Africa’s “Big Five” – elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard. Makweti has no fences, so the Big Five, zebra, wildebeest, and a host of other iconic species wander freely through the Lodge’s surrounds. Often, these wild “owners of the terrain” come for refreshment to the stream-fed waterhole just 80 yards from the open lounge and viewing deck.
Beyond the waterhole, Makweti’s luxury suites and dining room command panoramic views across a gorge-defined valley, toward infinite blue hills beyond.
These views, and many other enchanting vistas, extend across one of Southern Africa’s largest private game reserves – a wilderness expanse of some 40,000 hectares. For Makweti’s guests, the reserve stands open in its entirety to wonder-filled exploration.
Makweti’s location is moreover malaria-free, with a temperate and invigorating climate.
Your Makweti safari experiences will be complemented by the discreet elegance of your luxury suite, and by Makweti’s delectable, world-rated cuisine.
Makweti Safari Lodge was founded in 1995, and its management and staff embody decades of experience in creating memorable stays for a discerning international clientele.
The Welgevonden Game Reserve, located just three hours’ north of Johannesburg in the Limpopo Province’s Waterberg plateau, is one of the most ruggedly scenic reserves in South Africa, characterised by rolling hills, rugged gorges and grassy plains.
Aptly meaning ‘well found’, the Welgevonden is unlike anywhere else on earth, a true wilderness area with excellent game viewing and stunning scenery. Enjoy this mountain bushveld environment with roaring rivers and sweeping horizon views. The reserve is located at high altitude, enjoys a mild climate and is Malaria free making it worth a visit any time of the year.
As a result of the reserve’s diverse landscapes, visitors can enjoy Big Five sightings, in addition to encounters with over 50 mammal species, 250 bird species and some of the bush’s most beautiful wildflowers that make their appearance in early spring.
The Welgevonden also boasts one of Africa’s largest populations of white rhino on a private reserve, with such unusual species as brown hyena, aardwolf and aardvark also located within the reserve. The reserve has never been a hunting area and as such game viewing is up and close and personal. In addition to great game viewing, there is also ancient San Rock Art.
This is Africa at its most interesting and at its best.
