Chundu Island is a 1.4-Kilometre-long island located on the mighty Zambezi River just 21 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. This amazing country is coming into a preferred holiday destination with a strong focus on anti-poaching and a lively change in the political situation. While Victoria Falls remains a major attraction to nature lovers around the world, a number of new and exciting tourist destinations and attractions are opening up in and around Zimbabwe. A popular destination is the Zambezi National Park which stretched 50 kilometres upstream and inland from Victoria Falls along the Zambezi River towards Kazungula.
Chundu Island is a teardrop-shaped island and is approximately 1.4 kilometres long and at its widest point, it is approximately 0.4 kilometres. This is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy everything that Zimbabwe has to offer.
The main lodge is wrapped around enchanting trees and boasts the most magnificent views of the Zambezi River. Adjacent to the reception area is the Island Shop where guests can enjoy a bit of shopping and possibly take a few curios and island treasures home.
The heart of the property lies within its expansive reception, lounge, bar, inter-leading swimming pool deck and indoor/outdoor dining area. Each of these spots boast stunning views and idyllic sunsets, guests are always spoilt for choice. With Ilala palm style roofs, wooden decking, wood and double skin canvas Chundu Island illustrates a contemporary crisp and clean style.
Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the expansive Wine Cellar which hosts a selection of fine wines from South Africa. Sip on an aromatic Sauvignon Blanc, crisp Chardonnay or a beautiful Champagne whilst taking in the views from the pool deck. Evening meals are accompanied by full-bodied Merlot, robust Cabernet Sauvignon or flamboyant Pinotage wines.
The bar area overlooks the main deck and is home to Chundu Islands finest cocktails. Guests can enjoy refreshing Mojitos while relaxing in the pool and overlooking the river and seasonal beach.
‘Seychelles meets Zambezi’ is the best way to describe the 8 spacious suites at Chundu Island. The suites are sheltered by majestic trees bordering the island banks along the Zambezi River. This is the ideal destination for relaxing whilst taking in the sounds of nature.
There are 6 River View Suites each accommodating two persons. These suites are configured with either a super king or twin beds. The open-plan suite has an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and a private outdoor shower. Each suite has its own private deck with a day bed and seating area overlooking the Zambezi River allowing for a tranquil space for guests to relax and enjoy a cocktail or a cup of coffee and immerse themselves on the surroundings.
Situated on the other side of the lodge are 2 Family River View Suites which are configured with either a Super King or Twin Beds and have a separate second bedroom with two beds for children.
There is one open-plan en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and private outdoor shower. Each suite has its own private deck with a daybed and seating area overlooking the Zambezi River allowing for ample space for you to enjoy some family time away from the Main Lodge should you wish to do so.
Things to do at Chundu Island
Safari Walks - A skilled armed guide will accompany you either in the early morning or late afternoon through the Zambezi National Park as you take in all the wonders of nature. Keep an eye out for some of the larger animals that populate the area, including elephant, warthog, a variety of antelope, buffalo, lion and even the elusive leopard.
Canoeing - Paddle down the mighty Zambezi for a couple of hours under the watchful eye of a qualified river guide. Comfortable and steady inflatable canoes seat two, making it a wonderful activity for a couple to share. Look out for elephants drinking from the shore, and of course hippos and crocodiles.
Safari Game Drives - Chundu Island offers both early morning and late afternoon safari drives conducted in specially adapted open Landcruisers, with experienced and qualified guides. In the interests of conservation, Chundu Island Management are committed to a no off-road driving policy. Safari drives take place in the Zambezi National Park, which together with the Victoria Falls National Park extends over an area of 56 000 hectares.

This beautiful gem of a National Park is little known, despite its proximity to the world-famous Victoria Falls.
Split off from the Victoria Falls National Park in 1979, the 56,000 hectares of pristine wilderness and wildlife habitat has been a National Park in its own right ever since.
The Park is bisected by a tar road which runs between Victoria Falls and the Kazangula border post, dividing it into two sections
