Mhondoro Safari Lodge an ultra-luxurious, five-star private Safari Lodge located within the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa. This sophisticated, yet child-friendly lodge, is known for its underground waterhole hide, which is connected to the Main Lodge by a tunnel. This exclusive feature offers guests an accessible, safe and one-of-a-kind opportunity to get up close and personal to the animals drinking at the waterhole in front of the lodge. Mhondoro Safari Lodge is the first and only five-star Safari Lodge to offer this exciting and special experience.
The lodge is only a 2-hour and 45-minute drive from O.R. Tambo International Airport, making it the perfect safari destination for those coming to South Africa via Johannesburg. It is even faster if you are travelling by small plane as you’ll arrive in less than an hour and you’ll enjoy the breathtaking experience of flying over the Waterberg and Welgevonden Game Reserve.
Mhondoro Safari Lodge is a family-friendly destination, yet is private and exclusive enough that guests are able to relax and explore abundant wildlife on guided game drives. Welgevonden Game Reserve’s strict policy limiting the number of vehicles on the Reserve enhances the exclusive and peaceful game drives and ensures there will be no interruptions from vehicle traffic.
There are two Deluxe Suites at Mhondoro Safari Lodge. Both accommodate two guests and each has one bedroom with a bathroom and a private viewing deck overlooking the waterhole.
The Family Suite accommodates four guests. It has two bedrooms and because of its shared bathroom, dining and living areas, it’s the perfect accommodation for families with all facilities of the Main Lodge within a short walking distance.
The Honeymoon Suite offers the perfect romantic getaway. The building accommodates two guests and boasts one spacious bedroom with an en-suite bathroom.
The Executive Suite accommodates four guests and has two bedrooms, both with en-suite bathrooms. There is also an extra lounge area with a fireplace and a private viewing deck.
The Welgevonden Game Reserve, located just three hours’ north of Johannesburg in the Limpopo Province’s Waterberg plateau, is one of the most ruggedly scenic reserves in South Africa, characterised by rolling hills, rugged gorges and grassy plains.
Aptly meaning ‘well found’, the Welgevonden is unlike anywhere else on earth, a true wilderness area with excellent game viewing and stunning scenery. Enjoy this mountain bushveld environment with roaring rivers and sweeping horizon views. The reserve is located at high altitude, enjoys a mild climate and is Malaria free making it worth a visit any time of the year.
As a result of the reserve’s diverse landscapes, visitors can enjoy Big Five sightings, in addition to encounters with over 50 mammal species, 250 bird species and some of the bush’s most beautiful wildflowers that make their appearance in early spring.
The Welgevonden also boasts one of Africa’s largest populations of white rhino on a private reserve, with such unusual species as brown hyena, aardwolf and aardvark also located within the reserve. The reserve has never been a hunting area and as such game viewing is up and close and personal. In addition to great game viewing, there is also ancient San Rock Art.
This is Africa at its most interesting and at its best.
