Okahirongo River Camp is a luxurious tented camp far away from it all, on a ridge above the Kunene River in northwest Namibia. The desert landscape stretches out to meet mystical peaks along the horizon. The serene desert stillness is captivating. Often, the only sound you’ll hear in camp is the soothing ripple of the rapids below. Encounter this amazing ecosphere through walking safaris, scenic drives and river cruises.
The camp suits its surroundings, from the natural colours and materials to the solar panels and traditional lighting. Okahirongo River Camp is intimate, with just five tents, each with its own covered deck and amazing river views. Choose king or twin beds. Rooms have an indoor shower plus an outdoor shower with panoramic views. There is also a private tented family villa, with a spacious king bedroom and a twin room, and decking area.
When you reach this ultra-remote location, you’ll be rewarded with a fascinating landscape. Visit some of the world’s most unusual and picturesque locations, such as the red dunes or the Moon Valley. You can visit an authentic Himba village and meet the tribespeople, to get a taste of their lives and culture. See how they have adapted to desert life, including their unusual skincare routine. Get a croc’s-eye-view of the scenery with a cruise along the Kunene in a small pontoon boat. Walking puts the scale of this epic landscape in perspective. Enjoy a magical early-morning trek along one of the mountain chains that enclose and protect the Marienfluss Valley.
Marienfluss lies at the extreme north west of Kunene region. The Marienfluss is a large valley which provides grazing for the cattle and goats of the indigenous Himba population. The conservancy was registered in 2001 and covers 3,300 km2. There are a mere 340 people in the area – around one person per square kilometre. Grasslands dominate the valleys, with dunes covering the western section. Income is derived from conservation hunting and tourism.
