At Time + Tides Kakuli you will awaken to the chirping flock of Lilian’s lovebirds as they stop by for a morning drink. Pause mid-brunch to welcome a giraffe feeding on nearby trees. Sit back and watch as a herd of elephants lumber down to the river from the privacy of your outdoor shower.
All these wonderful elements come together to create Kakuli, which means old buffalo bull. It was the nickname given by locals to the pioneering founder, Norman Carr who began the tradition of walking safari here in South Luangwa National Park.
The camp boasts five bright and airy rooms including a two-bedroom & two-bathroom family suite. Each is designed to make the most of the panoramic setting offering expansive views of the river and permanent lagoon. The rooms feature a feather-top bed, indoor and outdoor shower, and a covered open-air seating area.
The main lounge shares the same enchanting views as the rooms and beneath it is a wildlife hide that offers up-close views of the visitors that stop by for a drink. Take a deep breath and admire the sweeping vista with a refreshing drink of your own before sampling traditional Zambian dishes at dinner.
Kakuli is a great base for exploring the bush. Whether you want to go on a walking adventure or a thrilling game drive, you will not be disappointed. With a resident lion pride, a seasonal colony of jewel-like carmine bee-eaters, and the most sightings of leopards in a single drive every year, Kakuli is a wildlife paradise. During the lush emerald ‘secret season’ venture out by boat and on foot to enjoy some of the best opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography.
South Luangwa National Park is the highlight of eastern Zambia. Known to locals as simply 'the South Park,' it was initially founded as the Luangwa Game Park in 1904, and converted to one of three game reserves in 1938. The impressive park covers an area of about 9050 square kilometres of the Luangwa Valley floor and lies anywhere from 500 meters to 800 meters above sea level. With its western and northwestern edge bounded by the Muchinga Escarpment and the southern borderline with the meandering Luangwa River, there's no shortage of dramatic and fascinating topography in this stunning game-rich park.
