If you are searching for a Zambian retreat that combines luxury and adventure look no further than Time + Tide's Mchenja. Hear baboons bark and monkeys chat as you follow the flick of a leopard’s tail across the river. Here you will feel your insides vibrate to the roar of a male lion passing through camp in the middle of the night. Locate elephants feeding on the seed pods just outside your room.
Mchenja is the local name for ebony, and the camp is tucked into a shady ebony grove beside the Luangwa River in the heart of South Luangwa National Park.
Featuring five rooms, including a two-bedroom and two-bathroom family suite, with pure and natural elegance. The rooms are framed with grass walls and enhanced with soft cushions and light-as-air curtains. The villas boast feather-top beds, large picture windows and open-air en-suite bathrooms with a bath looking out the glistening river.
Encapsulated by a bent ebony trunk, the main lounge has the feel of a spacious treehouse. During breakfast, you will hear the chorus of birdsong and laughing hippos. The best way to relax between safari activities is in the refreshing pool overlooking the river.
While the camp is relaxing and tranquil we urge you to pull yourself away from camp to track big cats through the bush with hushed voices and beating hearts. Night drives are always rewarding, with the bush revealing a different nocturnal surprise every time. At the right time of year, this is one of the best camps in the park for seeing carmine bee-eaters.
South Luangwa National Park is the highlight of eastern Zambia. Known to locals as simply 'the South Park,' it was initially founded as the Luangwa Game Park in 1904, and converted to one of three game reserves in 1938. The impressive park covers an area of about 9050 square kilometres of the Luangwa Valley floor and lies anywhere from 500 meters to 800 meters above sea level. With its western and northwestern edge bounded by the Muchinga Escarpment and the southern border line with the meandering Luangwa River, there's no shortage of dramatic and fascinating topography in this stunning game-rich park.
